Year 1 - Attenborough Class

Welcome to Attenborough Class

Age: 5-6

Teaching Team: Mrs Shellard and Mrs Bassili. Support Staff: Mrs Egan

Year 1 is a very important year for your child as they begin their Key Stage 1 journey. To ensure a smooth transition, we ensure your child learns through lots of hands-on learning opportunities. As the year progresses, the learning opportunities and tasks will become more formal to prepare them for Year 2.

Our curriculum has been developed to provide your child with lots of creative and inspiring opportunities. Where possible, we will spend time in the outside area learning about the wider world as we want to grow up looking after our planet – just like our class namesake David Attenborough.

Your child will explore a number of themes this year including: The Gunpowder Plot, London landmarks, toys from history and changes in the weather across the seasons. We will gently be encouraging them to become more independent in their learning as the year progresses.

Early reading is a priority for Year 1 as we want to ensure they have a good foundation to build on. Daily phonics sessions are delivered each morning; we follow the Read, Write Inc scheme. Your child will bring home two books which are matched to their current level of understanding each week. Ideally, your child should read to you for 20 minutes each day. Please make sure you sign your child’s reading record.

If you have any questions, please speak to a member of the team who will be happy to help.
