Year 4—Thunberg Class

Welcome to Thunberg Class

Age: 8-9

Teaching Team: Miss Winer  Support Staff: Mrs Michaeledes

Year 4 is an amazing year to be in!  We are looking forward to a fantastic, fun-filled year which will pave the way for future success. We are passionate about providing a positive learning environment where all children are inspired, engaged and supported in their learning in order to reach their full potential. Throughout, the year children will be encouraged to become more independent, not only in their learning, but also personally and socially. We look forward to seeing each one of our class grow and flourish as the year progresses.

The Year 4 curriculum is filled with exciting units of work to spark the children’s imagination and curiosity including: looking at the Amazon Rainforest, diving into the Roman Empire, understanding how chocolate has changed the world, considering what causes natural disasters and discovering all about electricity to name a few. Our Design and Technology lessons are extremely popular. We learn how to construct earthquake-proof buildings using nothing but paper straws and sticky tape. We also have the opportunity to become Willy Wonka chocolate designers and design, make and decorate our very own chocolate bar.

Alongside these wonderful topics we also have an opportunity to immerse ourselves and get lost in our book study units. During the course of the year, we will be reading The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson. These books will feed into our writing and wider curriculum.

We have some wonderful enrichment opportunities for the children. These include our half termly Arts Trophy competitions, visiting a chocolate museum, taking part in Forest School, going to the Verulamium, visiting a Mosque and going to the British Museum.

In Year 4, children are expected to know all their times tables up to 12 by the end of the year.  The children are given regular tests and complete times table challenges throughout the week. Children also have the opportunity to practise their times tables using Times Table Rockstars. This is all to support the children with their end of year Multiplication Tables Check.

The Year 4 team look forward to working with the children and all of our families closely in partnership this year. We aim to create a year filled with happy memories as well as enriched learning so that all children love coming to school and are confident, capable in their ability and become a caring member of the Hadley Wood community.
