Year 2—Parks Class
Welcome to Parks Class
Age: 6-7
Teaching Team: Mrs Cornes
Welcome to Year 2 – a special and exciting year full of new learning and wonderful experiences. This year marks the end of Key Stage 1, and our learning will prepare us for the transition to Key Stage 2.
One of our main goals this year is to build stamina in reading and writing. We will be reading longer texts and learning how to use our inference and comprehension skills. In our writing, we will focus on adding detail and description to really bring our work to life and capture the reader’s imagination.
In English lessons, we will build on our learning from Year 1 and continue to develop our writing in fun and creative ways. We will use stories, real-life experiences, pictures and more to inspire us, so writing feels exciting and meaningful for everyone.
In our mathematics lessons, we will be getting to grips with the four operations and learning how to explain our thinking clearly when solving problems. We will work hard, but we will also have fun while developing confidence in our reasoning and number fluency.
Year 2 is packed with fascinating topics and learning adventures. We will step into the past to learn about The Great Fire of London, travel the globe with our Around the World unit of work in our geography lessons and explore space and the Space Race in our science lessons.
Homework will be set every Friday at 9am, and it should be completed by the following Wednesday at 3pm. Any work handed in after this will be marked the week after.
Please continue to support your child by reading with them every day and signing their reading records. Reading is the key to success across all areas of learning in Year 2.
PE Days are Tuesdays and Thursdays, and children should come to school wearing their correct PE uniform on those days, ready to move and have fun.
We have also got some exciting enrichment experiences to look forward to, including visits to The Natural History Museum, Barnet Environment Centre, and our local Synagogue. These trips are brilliant opportunities to build independence, confidence, and lasting memories.
If you have any questions or concerns, please speak to one of the Year 2 Team at the end of the school day and they will be happy to help.
