Year 1 - Attenborough Class
Welcome to Attenborough Class
Age: 5-6
Teaching Team: Mrs Albon and Mrs Jennings.
A very warm welcome to Year 1. This is the beginning of your child’s exciting Key Stage 1 journey. Our dedicated and nurturing team are looking forward to building on the strong foundations of learning your child developed in our Reception Class.
This year, our curriculum is packed full of engaging and meaningful learning experiences. From uncovering the story behind Bonfire Night through our history unit on the Great Fire of London, to exploring how toys have changed over time, each topic is designed to spark imagination, creativity and a love of learning. In design and technology lessons, children will enjoy practical learning they design and make their own fruit smoothies, while our exploration of inspirational figures – including our class namesake Sir David Attenborough, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Ruby Bridges – will help us understand courage, kindness and how we can make a difference in our community and society.
Reading is at the heart of our learning. We will share a wide range of stories and texts through our rich literature spine and enjoy daily phonics lessons to develop reading fluency and a love of books. In Year 1, we listen to the children read daily in their RWI lessons and change the books weekly. Please ensure that you sign their reading record at least three times during the week to indicate that they have read at home, otherwise we will be unable to move them onto the next book. The children cannot wait to share their reading with you, so please support them by listening to them to read daily and read stories to them at home.
Our learning extends beyond the classroom with regular local walks, exciting Forest School sessions, in school workshops and a memorable trip to London to see Tower Bridge – part of our art and geography unit inspired by the incredible work of artist Stephen Wiltshire.
If you have any questions or concerns, please come and see a member of the Year 1 team at the end of the school day, write a note in your child’s reading record or contact the office to enable us to support you and your child in a timely manner.
Year 1 is a year of discovery, growth and joyful learning – and we cannot wait to share the journey with you.
