Year 5—Mandela Class
Welcome to Mandela Class
Age: 9-10
Teaching Team: Mrs Petrie
Welcome to Year 5 and Mandela Class. As your child moves into Upper Key Stage 2, they are entering an exciting phase of their learning journey—one filled with new challenges, deeper thinking, and greater independence. We are here to support, encourage, and inspire them every step of the way.
This year, your child will enjoy a wide range of rich and memorable experiences. From immersive visits to the Science Museum to our Big Day Out at Stanborough Lakes, their learning will stretch beyond the classroom walls. They will explore the world of Shakespeare through dynamic performances by the Young Shakespeare Company and take part in engaging workshops led by experts from the National Archives and the Money Matters program. Our Forest School sessions and summer-term swimming lessons will help them build confidence, resilience, and a love for the outdoors.
Academically, Year 5 is all about deepening understanding and striving for mastery. We are committed to ensuring your child feels confident and well-prepared in English and mathematics by the end of the year. In our design and technology lessons, the children will design and build burgers, engineer electronic fairground rides, and create floating Viking Longboats. In art and design lessons, they will decorate Ancient Greek-inspired pottery, develop biome-themed prints in the style of William Morris, and craft Viking brooches using mixed media. These creative projects are closely linked to our history and geography topics—such as Ancient Greece, modern Europe, biomes, North America, and the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons—helping your child develop a connected understanding across the curriculum.
Online safety and digital literacy are at the heart of our Computing curriculum. To support you as parents and carers, we have organised workshops to help you feel informed and confident in guiding your child’s digital life. In music lessons, your child will explore musical theatre, the Blues, and classical music—nurturing creativity and a love for performance.
Throughout the year, we aim to make learning meaningful, challenging, and fun. Our goal is for every child to succeed academically, feel proud of their achievements, and take away memories they will treasure.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We are always here to support you and your child throughout this important year.
